Damafing Keita Thomas, Ph.D Damafing Keita Thomas, Ph.D

Dr. Thomas works with children, adolescents, and adults, and specializes in women’s issues, including loving mothers who struggle to cope with stress; feel overworked and underappreciated; and notice that the demands of family are taking a toll.

Dr. Thomas’ work with children and adolescents is from a family systems approach. “My approach views the family as an emotional unit. The goal from this approach is for family members to learn to recognize the emotional relationship patterns and to learn how emotions are handled in the family, so that individual family members can manage themselves in healthier ways.”

Dr. Thomas also provides couples counseling regarding issues such as communication problems, pre-marital issues, and marital conflict. Dr. Thomas conducts psychological evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults to assess for emotional and learning disorders.

Additionally, Dr. Thomas provides individual counseling services for a wide range of clinical issues including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and career issues, including job burnout and decision-making. “I especially enjoy assisting clients who have symptoms of depression and anxiety, and are experiencing negative self-talk or thoughts of suicide. I enjoy working to help instill a ‘sense of hope’, and to help remind such clients of their own resilience. My approach to therapy is designed to be adaptive to the client’s needs, desires, and values. It is my belief this approach being broader and more flexible, offers the best opportunity of bringing out the strengths that are familiar to clients, including their existing support symptoms, stress management, their sense of meaning and purpose regarding life, exercise, mindfulness meditation, nutrition, and prayer or some spiritual presence in their lives.”

Dr. Thomas received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Georgia State University, and her M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Clark Atlanta University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and currently working towards licensure as a psychologist. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville’s (UTK) counseling center. Her past clinical experiences include 6 years as a college counselor at Clayton State and Georgia State University’s counseling centers, and she has experience in private practice and community mental health settings.

In her spare, time, Dr. Thomas enjoys spending time with family, international travel and she is an avid tennis player.
